The Role
The Staff Software Engineer is responsible for ensuring the quality and cohesion of solution architecture components within their assigned domain, ensuring they conform to approved GM IT standards and align with future enterprise and domain architectural goals. This role encompasses both hands-on development of IT technology solution architectures and the management of various architectural initiatives. Additionally, the Software Engineer will assist in deploying applications to our plants while implementing Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices to enhance operational efficiency and reliability.
The Staff Software Engineer is responsible for architecting, leading, and implementing business sponsor requirements, which are essential for transforming solutions into a programmatic approach. While a deep knowledge of electrical modules, flashing processes, automotive electrical harness architecture, test systems, and end-of-line general assembly is beneficial, it is not mandatory. This expertise can enhance the engineer's ability to deliver effective solutions that align with project goals.
An ideal candidate will be somebody who enjoys working on complex system software, is very customer centric, understands the big picture and feels strongly not only about building good software, but about making that software achieve its goals. This person must be experienced with performance optimization, Test Driven Development, Enterprise software integration patterns and methods, and Performance tuning & usability, assessment/improvements.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
- Architecting, developing and leading junior developers, help with requirement analysis, design, implementing and testing software solutions to solve some of the most advanced technical challenges facing the industry.
- Responsible for the design and development of application platforms that will be used for solving commonly occurring problems in End-of-Line and General Assembly (GA).
- Contribute to the full stack technology solution and drive the technical execution.
- Architecting solutions to offer processes and methodology for end users to perform electrical repair on the harness at End of line and components that arise during manufacturing.
- Work to solve difficult challenges in software engineering as the scale and suite of our applications grow.
- Partner with key stakeholders in product management and manufacturing system teams to define strategy and requirements.
- Lead cross functional development of new technology from design to deployment
- Collaborate within your own team as well as other IT teams
- Lead a team of software developers, including experienced to new college graduates.
- Help and coach new college hires and team members with software development methodologies, architect solutions and build an innovative team around you.

Additional Description
What You'll Need (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline
- 7+ years in software development using C++
- 5+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and current systems
- Proficiency in C, Java, Python, C#, and embedded C
- Experience with SQL databases like PostgreSQL
- Experience working with Visual studio, Azure, and IntelliJ
- Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures and algorithm design, and complexity analysis
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- 7+ years industry experience as an Electrical, Mechanical or Software Engineer with experience in an agile environment
Company Vehicle : Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate.
Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
