Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

The Institutional team enables the foundations of Coinbase's institutional business supporting thousands of large financial institutions. We enable institutions to trade and custody their digital assets and participate in the crypto economy in a secure and safe way. The team has interesting work on building cutting-edge crypto technologies, scalable infrastructure and UI surfaces across web, mobile and browser extensions in a fast-paced industry with an opportunity to build several new initiatives.

The Derivatives team within the Institutional Product Group has built an end-to-end platform that powers Futures trading (FCM) at Coinbase. The product launched in 2023 and has gained significant market adoption since. The team owns the entire life cycle of derivatives trading including trade execution, risk management, and settlement. As a Technical Lead Manager (TLM) on the Derivatives team, you’ll be instrumental in designing, building, and executing core solutions that drive our systems. This is a technical role perfect for a Staff level engineer who is interested in expanding into a limited amount of management duties. You will be responsible for managing a small team (3-6 ICs), and providing technical leadership and impact through dedicated resources.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Write high quality, well tested code to meet the needs of your customers and uplift the technical bar across the team
  • Architect and develop core derivatives platform responsible for trade execution and risk management.
  • Be a thoughtful technical voice within the team, aiding in diligent architectural decisions and fostering a culture of high-quality and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure successful delivery and operation of complex, distributed systems at scale.
  • Coach your direct reports to have a positive impact on the organization and support their career growth.

What we look for in you:

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering
  • You’ve experienced architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact
  • You’ve designed, built, scaled and maintained high volume and low latency production services
  • You’re passionate about building an open financial system that brings the world together

Nice to haves:

  • You have engineering management experience.
  • You have built order management systems or risk engines that have high volume and low latency characteristics
  • You have gone through a rapid growth in your company (from startup to mid-size)
  • You have worked with Golang, Docker, AWS, Postgres, MongoDB, Kafka
  • Crypto-forward experience, including familiarity with onchain activity such as interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, and engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services.

Job #: GIBE06US

*Answers to crypto-related questions may be used to evaluate your onchain experience
