Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Portfolio Manager for our advisory business, Vestwell Advisors. This role is integral to Vestwell’s ability to achieve our service and revenue growth goals for the next several years, encompassing both our existing products and any new products we bring to market. 

This role is best suited for a person who is highly interested in portfolio construction, asset management,  refinement, evolution of our existing investment products and execution.

The individual in this Portfolio Manager role will spearhead efforts to strategically integrate investment expertise with marketing, sales, and operational efficiency to scale and refine Vestwell’s investment offerings. They will actively collaborate to design and implement robust strategies that ensure seamless portfolio management, efficient program operations, and effective onboarding of new investment programs. This role is critical for positioning Vestwell to offer a superior portfolio of investment solutions through strategic thinking, meticulous analysis, and disciplined project management.

The ideal candidate will excel in breaking down organizational silos internally and between Vestwell, external service providers, and counterparties, fostering a cohesive, high-performing operational environment. Leveraging their deep understanding of investment management processes, they will drive continuous refinement, evolution, and execution of our investment products and services.

Serving as a proactive agent of change, the candidate will employ exceptional interpersonal skills, determination, logical reasoning, and practical judgment to build consensus across various stakeholders. Independently cultivating relationships across multiple organizational levels and departments, the candidate will consistently overcome challenges and achieve strategic objectives aligned with Vestwell’s growth ambitions.

What Will You Be Doing?

Here are the top 5 high-level goals for the senior portfolio manager's first year:

Client asset management and growth: On a daily basis, the Portfolio Manager will efficiently manage and grow client assets by implementing tailored investment strategies. This involves monitoring market conditions, analyzing client portfolios, and making informed investment decisions to ensure optimal performance. The manager will maintain strong relationships with clients, regularly checking in to ensure their satisfaction and trust in the firm, and promptly addressing any concerns or requests.

Portfolio management  and optimization: The manager will manage existing and develop and optimize institutional or client retirement  portfolios to align with clients' financial goals and risk tolerance. This involves conducting in-depth assessments of client needs, creating customized investment plans, and continuously reviewing and adjusting portfolios to maximize returns while managing risk. The manager will stay updated on market trends and economic forecasts to make proactive adjustments to portfolios.

Client communication and presentations: Regular communication with clients is a key aspect of the role. The manager will prepare and deliver clear and insightful presentations and reports on portfolio performance, market trends, and investment strategies. They will schedule and conduct meetings with clients to discuss their investment objectives, provide updates, and address any questions or concerns.

Marketing and sales collaboration: The Portfolio Manager will collaborate closely with the marketing and sales teams to develop and execute strategies that promote the firm's wealth management capabilities. This involves participating in strategy meetings, contributing to marketing materials, and assisting in the development of campaigns aimed at attracting new clients and retaining existing ones. The manager will also support sales efforts by providing expertise and insights during client acquisition activities.

Smooth transition of client assets: Ensuring a seamless transition of client assets with sub-advisors is a critical part of the role. The manager will oversee the transition process, coordinating with sub-advisors to maintain continuity and minimize disruptions. They will set up and refine processes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of these transitions, ensuring that all client assets are managed smoothly and in accordance with their investment plans.

By focusing on these key activities, the Portfolio Manager and Strategy Lead will play a crucial role in managing and growing client assets, optimizing portfolios, maintaining strong client relationships, and supporting the firm's marketing and sales efforts to achieve long-term success.

Requirements:

  • At least 7 years of proven experience in portfolio management, specifically designing and managing multi-asset class portfolios and risk-based investment models.
  • CFA Charterholder or CFA candidate.
  • Deep understanding of fixed income and equity markets, with demonstrated capability in asset allocation strategy and portfolio construction.
  • Strong foundation in marketing and sales within the investment or financial services industry.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with proven ability to drive operational efficiencies and scalable processes.
  • Strong analytical skills and systems-thinking approach, demonstrated through successful resolution of complex investment challenges.
  • 7+ years of experience working in fast-paced start-up environments, with comfort navigating ambiguity and commitment to continuous learning.
  • Proven ability in delivering impactful presentations to senior-level prospective clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience collaborating closely with senior management to set strategic directions and develop actionable, tactical plans to achieve business objectives.
  • Comfort and willingness to engage in tactical, hands-on tasks as required; a collaborative team player who contributes at multiple levels.

The expected base salary range for this position is $180K - $190K base. This position is eligible to participate in the Company Bonus Pool and is eligible to receive new hire equity in the Company. Please note that salary bands are based on NY and other similar metro areas and may differ based on where the role is ultimately hired.

Next steps can vary by role, but the usual next steps are a skill or experience screen (e.g. a coding interview for an Engineer, a portfolio review for a Designer, deeper experience call for other roles) which leads to a virtual or in-person interview panel after that if the screens go well.
