Role Description
The Senior Director, Engineering Operations plays a critical role in setting the strategic vision, managing operating rhythms, overseeing budget, and managing headcount for the Salesforce Database (SDB) team. Reporting to the VP of Engineering Operations, this role requires a high degree of relationship management in working with engineering, finance, employee success, technical program managers and other Salesforce groups to to work through ambiguity and drive results.
Our Salesforce Database (SDB) team provides a highly available database for Salesforce applications. Within the large SDB team, we provide a highly durable and available distributed storage for public clouds. We are defining the next generation of trusted enterprise computing in the cloud. We're a fast-paced, metrics driven team. We're highly collaborative and work across all areas of our technology stack. We live and breathe transactional systems, distributed systems and enterprise reliability, availability and scale. As part of building our team in India, we are looking for engineers and leaders who are passionate about working on the RDBMS technology of massive scale and one that thrives with continuous innovation.
Key responsibilities of the Sr. Director, Engineering Operations include:

  • Engineering Operations: Support Engineering leadership in continuous improvement of key performance metrics through dashboard reviews, action planning, and monitoring metrics aligned to key technical areas, such as: security, availability, access, etc. This entails understanding the accuracy of the data, rationalizing the data and challenging the data source (when necessary), monitoring the progress, and tracking improvements.
  • Thought Leadership: Bring a beginners mindset, leading with innovation, to all aspects of operations and challenging status quo when needed. Understand how AI will impact the business and be prepared and willing to lead innovative transformation efforts;
  • Organization Transformation: Understand engineering culture and help drive culture roadmap initiatives related to org design, training, leadership development, etc.
  • Strategy: Support content development, storyboarding, and messaging for SDB for Town Halls, Leadership Meetings, etc. Influence the SDB strategy by articulating the value that SDB delivers through key accomplishments and roadmaps.
  • Business Planning: Support and partner cross-functionally to drive end-to-end business planning and cross-functional planning processes; Work with various levels of leadership to identify strategic initiatives to run, transform and grow the business; Support the strategic planning process that culminates into a cohesive set of priorities and execution plans for the SDB organization.
  • Rhythm of the Business: Support and implement the right level of operating structures / cadences and governance models that optimizes leadership and organization time; Structure and execute operational and strategic initiatives by developing plans, gathering and synthesizing relevant data, performing analysis and and developing recommendations.
  • Stakeholder Management: Inform, influence and execute organization strategies on behalf of the SDB engineering management team; Break down organization issues into key components and design analytical and operational approaches to identify solutions.
  • Budget Management: Provide quarterly Travel & Expense budgets to SDB leaders and report on actuals on a monthly basis; Determine root cause of significant variances. Manage SDB Hyperforce (public cloud budget) budget across all spend categories which includes: understanding actuals, forecasting, summarizing variances and remediating gaps.
  • Communications & Branding: Collaborate across the organization to ensure communication channels meet stakeholder needs and recommend changes accordingly for leadership and organization wide forums across multiple delivery vehicles: Newsletters, All Hands, Q&A Sessions, etc.
  • Process Optimization: Evaluate internal business processes and identify areas of optimization across our partner functions, including: Finance, HR, Recruiting, Product Management, Program Management, Executive Administrators, etc.
  • Roster and Headcount Management: Support headcount planning, headcount allocation, roster updates, etc. including related headcount governance and tracking changes.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in Business/Engineering Operations or related experience
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to move quickly from insight to action
  • Ability to work effectively with technical and business audiences
  • Ability to influence and drive alignment across different perspectives
  • Orchestrate communication streams across various teams ensuring alignment

For Washington-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $177,600 to $300,200.

For California-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $193,800 to $327,600.

For Illinois based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $177,600 to $300,200.

Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
