We're looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to help us accomplish our mission of improving lives by learning from the experience of every person with cancer. Are you ready to be the next changemaker in cancer care?
What You'll Do
As a Machine Learning Engineer on the Clinical Research Data Insights team, you will work with cross-functional leads to design solutions in a highly ambiguous, impactful problem space with a high degree of autonomy. In collaboration with other members of the team, you'll help guide the team's product roadmap and lead the technical development effort of novel data products powered by AI.
The Clinical Research Business Unit at Flatiron supports multiple products that enable sponsors to accelerate the clinical research process from end-to-end and improve patient access to clinical trials in an inclusive and equitable way. As part of our strategy, we're pioneering the use of machine learning (ML), large language models (LLMs), and natural language processing (NLP) to radically accelerate clinical research and development for oncology.
In addition, you'll also:

  • Apply AI tools to solve a variety of problems in the clinical development space - from extracting data in unstructured documents to identifying candidates for trials to automating data entry into Intentional Data Capture software
  • Develop prototypes and optimize prompting strategies for LLM-based solutions, with a focus on accuracy and transparency
  • Work with quantitative scientists and oncologists to validate that your models are fit for use in the context of clinical development and can generate sound scientific insights
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with software engineers to productionize, scale, and monitor the models you develop and embed them within Flatiron's suite of clinical research software

Who You Are
You're a product-focused data scientist, with experience in leveraging ML and NLP to solve real-world problems. You're excited by the prospect of rolling up your sleeves to tackle meaningful problems each and every day. You're a kind, passionate and collaborative problem-solver who seeks and gives candid feedback, and values the chance to make an important impact.

  • You have 5+ years of relevant working experience in a technical capacity, with a focus on ML. Prior experience with NLP is preferred, as is at least 3+ years of experience working in industry
  • You have a strong background in applying ML to solve real-world problems and a solid grasp of the underlying statistical fundamentals of ML
  • You have collaborated with other technical team members in a production development environment using formal version control, Python, and SQL
  • You have led cross-functional initiatives and excel at influencing decision-making without authority

Extra Credit

  • You have experience with LLMs, including practical experience with prompt engineering and evaluation of large language models
  • You have ML experience in a healthcare setting
  • You have experience with the risks of bias in machine learning, health equity research/analysis or have worked with underrepresented groups in a clinical research setting
  • You are familiar with the workflows and software used in clinical research
  • You have an understanding of ethical AI principles, including bias mitigation, fairness, and transparency in AI systems

If this sounds like you, you'll fit right in at Flatiron.
