Austin is home to Optiver’s custom trading system hardware research, design and manufacturing facility. We’re looking to expand our team with an engineer who can help with designing, manufacturing, validating, testing, repairing and, at times helping to install the optical cables and components use in our trading systems hardware.

Who we are

Optiver is a tech-driven trading firm and leading global market maker. As one of the oldest market making institutions, we are a trusted partner of 70+ exchanges across the globe. Our mission is to constantly improve the market by injecting liquidity, providing accurate pricing, increasing transparency and acting as a stabilizing force no matter the market conditions. Austin is home to Optiver’s custom trading system hardware research, design and manufacturing facility; here we design and build bespoke high performance trading systems. We are seeking to expand our team with a Mechanical Engineer eager to specialize in the manufacturing of these advanced systems. You will engage with a broad spectrum of technologies, ranging from conventional manufacturing methods to 3D printing, and from fiber optics to electronics.

As a manufacturing focused mechanical engineer, you will assume responsibility for the fabrication of custom parts and the assembly of systems. This role is a combination of engineering and technical work and ideally suited for someone who loves to blend hands-on technical skills, problem solving and engineering insights.

What you'll do

  • Perform functions associated with all manufacturing operations: hands-on assembly, rework and quality testing of parts, components, subassemblies and final assemblies
  • Fiber optic work that includes designing, customizing, splicing and terminating fiber optics which connect our systems together
  • Engage with external partners for outsourcing elements of our manufacturing and sourcing of components
  • Improve our designs for manufacturability and testability
  • Design and build fixtures and tools needed for manufacturing

Who you are

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or similar
  • 1+ years of experience with modelling in CAD (Solidworks, Fusion 360 and similar)
  • Interest in design and hands-on prototyping as well as small batch production
  • Strong mechanical reasoning skills, such as the ability to select appropriate materials, features, and manufacturing methods for the application and design constraints
  • Willingness to learn the theory and practice of engineering, manufacturing and measurements in many domains ranging from optical to electrical
  • Strong communication skills including technical writing for manuals and assembly procedures

The following experience is considered a plus:

  • Manufacturing (3D printing, machine tools, or CNC)
  • Building electronics (soldering or PCB design)
  • Complex assemblies (robots, drones, or lasers)
  • Experience with DFM, DFA, and/or L6S methodologies

What you’ll get:

  • Work alongside best-in-class professionals from over 40 different countries.
  • Performance based bonus structure that is unmatched anywhere in the industry. We combine our profits across desks, teams and offices into a global profit pool fostering a truly collaborative environment to work in.
