Join Outside as Art Director and shape the visual identity of an iconic outdoor lifestyle brand across print and digital channels. This dual-platform role offers the opportunity to craft compelling narratives through design, leading the artistic vision for our quarterly magazine while directing digital aesthetics for Outside Online. You'll report to the Outside Editorial Director and collaborate with editorial leadership to create captivating covers and layouts, manage photography and illustration direction, and ensure brand consistency across all visual touchpoints. This position balances creative direction with operational leadership, including budget management and team supervision.

Within 1 month, you will: 

  • Brainstorm/conceptualize, with photo editor and Editorial Director, on future issues and cover subjects and concepts.
  • Research artwork, archival photography, and stock photography in collaboration with a photo editor.
  • Provide art direction to photographers and illustrators, including new online templates and any online photo galleries.
  • Support online art needs as needed, including but not limited to, one-off illustration assignments or Getty collages
  • Collaborate cross functionally to lead the creative process with editors and photo editors

Within 6 months, you will: 

  • Execute and oversee all layouts, cover, and design aspects of the quarterly Outside magazine in collaboration with the Editorial Director, seeing all magazine pages through the production process to ship.
  • Oversee and approve the Outside Magazine Art Department budget, creating an organized summary of expenses from each issue. 
  • Work with editors and the production department to meet timelines, adjust book maps, and help with logistics for each issue.
  • Oversee visual direction of the website in collaboration with the Outside Digital Director 
  • Manage Outside Online (OOL) art process including the online art budget
  • Run point on digital art for large initiatives, like features, columns, and big packages; including lead images, inline images, multimedia needs, and digital presentation + social assets for these projects

What YOU bring to Outside:  (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Ability to see things holistically and manage the direction of the visual side of the brand.
  • Proficient on multiple platforms including Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and the family of Google applications.
  • 5+ years total experience in the creation of magazine layouts, digital design, branding, and photo editing, preferably at least 2 years in a leadership role
  • Experience with Asana is preferred.
  • Ability to manage, prioritize, and organize multiple projects to meet deadlines on a small team
  • A collaborative and creative mindset that brings out the best in other staffers
  • Experience implementing a rebrand or redesign (logo redesigns, updating visuals and assets) preferred
  • Pre-Press & Print Production: Understanding of CMYK vs. RGB workflows, color correction, proofing, and working with printers to ensure high-quality output.

What We Offer:

Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of  between $80,000 to $110,000.  Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission . Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away,  sick leave, and more.  This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors
