At SailPoint, building a people-first culture is about prioritizing each team member’s growth and sense of belonging. “The best strategy can be built, but without the right culture, we’ll never perform as an organization,” said Laurie Evans, SVP of digital sales. Sure, the free beer, taco Tuesdays and candy drawers are perks, but focusing on connections is what gives work the most meaning. “I’ve been fortunate throughout my career at SailPoint to not only have great managers but also great mentors,” said Ross Shwarts, manager of professional services who’s been with the company for 10 years. “Now, I spend most of my time mentoring our newer team members to enable them to become rock stars and take on lead roles.”

A FOCUS ON BELONGING
Building the foundation for success
“It’s important to build the right leadership team to motivate and inspire an organization of sellers,” Laurie Evans said. Evans leads the digital sales organization of more than 120 team members who assist customers throughout the buying journey. To cultivate an environment where everyone can be successful, she prioritizes building a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture. “One of the first things I championed was a culture committee. This cross-sectional team coordinates awards, recognitions and fun events to ensure every person feels a sense of belonging, excitement and celebration.”

TAKING THE LEAD
Everyone has opportunities to grow
Loren Veyrheden
Manager, Engineering
Loren Veyrheden mentors each of her engineering team members to help guide their professional development. She explained that understanding their goals “allows me to be creative in how I come up with opportunities for people.” Her team is always connected and ready to jump in when a peer needs help. And to make sure everyone has the opportunity to grow their leadership skills, Veyrheden said team members “take turns leading our Agile ceremony meetings to practice communication skills, facilitating meetings, driving decisions and leading through ambiguity.”
Everyone is extremely supportive and ready to try new things that might improve how we work.
CONNECTING ACROSS TEAMS
Sharing our personal and professional selves
Understanding the importance of connections, Ross Shwarts sets up weekly one-to-ones with his direct reports. “Sometimes we talk about work; sometimes we talk about ridiculous things our kids do. This time together helps me understand what is important to them personally and professionally.” To ensure his team members feel valued and heard, they regularly spend time as a group to work through problems. And when an occasional project requires long hours to complete, it doesn’t go unnoticed. “My boss will help me close out the project, then tell me to take some time to go do something fun.”
