PetRelocation.com has a simple mission — the Austin-based pet relocation company quite literally specializes in moving family pets, whether they be of the household variety, or of a more exotic brand.
Dedicated to handling the logistical nightmares associated with moving pets internationally, the site has exploited a gap in the pet industry that — until its creation — had not been addressed.
“A lot of international moves require quite a bit of paperwork and customs clearance that can become very, very complicated, so it makes sense for a lot of people to hire experts in order to not only make it easier for themselves, but to avoid delays that could put the pet at risk,” said Caitlin Moore, the content marketing specialist for PetRelocation.com. “Our services are geared towards the safety of the pet, as well as handling the hurdles that people don’t really know about if they haven’t moved before.”

Started in 2004 by husband and wife team Kevin and Angie O’Brien, PetRelocation.com hasn’t strayed far from its downtown Austin roots, something that’s apparent both geographically and principally. Kevin was one of the first employees of HotJobs.com and came to Austin in 2000 to open and manage a sales office. HotJobs.com was acquired by Yahoo! in 2002, allowing Kevin to start a doggy daycare and pet taxi service that eventually grew to service international moves, something that PetRelocation.com now focuses on.
2014 marked the sixth year in a row that PetRelocation.com was recognized as one of America’s fastest-growing private companies by Inc., and despite having grown 99% and doubling their yearly revenue from $3.5 million in 2010 to $7 million in 2013, the same basic goal of ensuring safe and reliable transportation of family pets remains at the heart of the business.
“We look for people who have good project management skills; who are detail oriented,” said Moore. “Our shippers come from a variety of professional backgrounds, but when it comes down to it though, they have to be pet lovers, because they’re dealing with pets and owners 24/7.”
After partnering with fellow Austin startups Austin Pets Alive, GoBank, and Barkbox for a SXSW 2015 party to get a group of puppies adopted, PetRelocation.com plans to make greater strides in the community.
“Even though we’re a company that does a lot of work internationally, Austin is our home, and we want to do more to be involved in the local business scene here.”
