Senior Talent Acquisition Partner Andy Clawson and his teammates at digital game developer SciPlay were sifting through employee applications recently when they noticed something was missing.
Clawson immediately reached out to the management team, while his colleagues worked together to find the underlying issue. Ultimately, the team realized that the company’s legacy system required a binary gender. They quickly updated the application to include multiple gender identity options.
For Clawson, this instance is simply one example of how SciPlay takes action when it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion.
“Our leadership team champions DEI by acting immediately when an issue arises,” he said.
This focus on equity is important to Clawson. Since joining the team about one year ago, he has seen the company truly “walk the walk” when it comes to DEI — and as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, he feels like he belongs.
“I’ve never felt more safe, welcomed and comfortable as I do now,” Clawson said.
Built In Austin caught up with Clawson to learn how employees at SciPlay are empowered to drive change and be their authentic selves.
How have you seen employees bring about meaningful change at SciPlay as it pertains to DEI?
At SciPlay, we welcome and celebrate gender diversity. So when the hiring team recently noticed a lack of gender options in our applications, we seized the opportunity to make a meaningful change. I initially spoke with the leadership team about this issue. Meanwhile, my colleagues across the company were equally motivated to understand the underlying issue and find a solution. Following discussions with multiple departments, we realized our legacy system required a binary gender, so we all came together quickly and updated the application to include multiple gender identity options.
SPACE TO #BEYOU
According to Clawson, SciPlay’s DEI efforts are always in motion. Since the beginning of this year, the company has continued to strengthen these efforts, ensuring that all employees — both new and tenured — feel comfortable, welcomed and celebrated. “We have cultivated a culture in which employees can embrace SciPlay’s leading core value, #beYou,” Clawson said.
How does SciPlay’s leadership team take a proactive approach to improving DEI?
Employee concerns are met with empathy and urgency. When the leadership team addressed the application issue, I was coming up on my one-year anniversary at SciPlay, and it became clearer to me than ever before that the company is on a mission to continually improve its DEI efforts.
