BlackLocus was a start-up before being acquired by Home Depot, which has given it the advantage of preserving an innovative culture with the added advantages of enterprise structure and benefits.

The Home Depot connection provides BlackLocus employees with perks like excellent work-life balance; health, dental, vision and life insurance that all begin on the first day of employment; employer-matched 401K contributions; and an open and flexible vacation policy.

BlackLocus prides itself on incorporating diversity into its team, especially supporting women in tech. They offer generous parental leave and host local meetups for Austin women in data science.

This emphasis on diversity and a start-up culture with enterprise benefits make BlackLocus Built In Austin’s featured company of the month.

We are lucky to be located right in the heart of downtown Austin, with our office on the top two floors of the historic Scarbrough Building on the corner of 6th & Congress. Beautiful views of both the Capitol building, and the Congress St bridge welcome you on both floors!

What they do: BlackLocus is an innovation lab operating within The Home Depot, the top home improvement retailer in the world. To stay ahead of the curve, Home Depot is making a substantial investment in data science, innovation, technology and design, with BlackLocus being on the cutting edge of the most exciting developments.

The perks: In addition to being intentional about work-life balance and offering an open and flexible vacation policy, BlackLocus also provides health, dental, vision, life, short-term disability and long-term disability insurance starting on day one of employment. They offer an employee stock purchase program and make matching employer contributions to 401(k) after one year.

Women in Tech: BlackLocus is serious about incorporating diversity into their team, and champions women in the workplace. They boast a gender pay gap below 10% and regularly host local meetups, such as Women in Data Science and Austin Data Leaders. Last year, Senior Manager Stephanie Piland shared with Built In how she initiated a company-wide mentoring program. “It provided an unanticipated view into how our CEO thought about developing our business, and it raised my profile when the next promotion discussions came around,” she said.
