Sometimes seemingly recondite aspects of the tech industry are eminently important. They even save lives. Case in point? SubjectWell, a medtech startup making recruitment for clinical trials easier for patients, pharmaceutical and biotech companies alike.

SubjectWell’s team members are solving patient recruitment problems that, in turn, help healthcare companies to more effectively tackle important issues like cancer treatment.

And while the impact of the company on the important work of patient recruitment for clinical trials — a more than $100 billion sector — can’t be understated, SubjectWell’s recent work making patient recruitment for Covid-19 vaccine trials more seamless and efficient illustrated, in dramatic relief, the ways in which medtech companies working on even the most modest of projects can have a similarly significant impact.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, my team at SubjectWell was tasked with building an appointment-scheduling system and integrating it with our call center software to support patient recruiting for Covid-19 vaccine trials,” Casey Woods, software engineer and chief enthusiasm officer, told Built In this February. “I worked specifically on a subfeature to help expedite patient qualification — adding a series of screening questions during the signup process. The timeline was tight, and it required the combined effort of every developer, but we got the appointment system built in two weeks, and it worked very well. I’m incredibly proud of the impact that my team made.”

What they do: SubjectWell operates a clinical trials marketplace for patients suffering from chronic health conditions. Since 2012, the venture-capital backed healthtech startup has helped more than 115 pharmaceutical and biotech companies recruit qualified patients for clinical trials in more than 175 therapeutic areas.

We’re uniquely positioned to meet the needs of patients who are eager to participate in clinical research with more support.”

Expanding patients’ options: This March, SubjectWell announced plans to expand its services to include oncology clinical trials — starting with the most common form of lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer. In a press release, the company noted that cancer patients often seek emerging treatments — those undergoing clinical trials — but have traditionally been hindered from participating in those trials because of “notoriously complicated protocols.”

“We’ve already seen more than 40,000 cancer patients register into our expanded marketplace specifically looking for new treatment options. With SubjectWell’s patient-centric model, we’re uniquely positioned to meet the needs of patients who are eager to participate in clinical research with more support,” said Ivor Clarke, CEO of SubjectWell.

A focus on wellness: In addition to fully paid vision, dental and medical benefits, including mental health benefits, SubjectWell offers its team members access to a number of wellness-promoting perks. These perks include access to employer-funded HRA accounts, paid family medical leave, unlimited PTO and a flexible work schedule designed to give team members the flexibility to work optimally and live their lives outside of work to the fullest.
