“You’re My Butter Half” is one of the most popular selfie backdrops in Austin.
The iconic bread-and-butter mural can be found on the corner of a brick building at 2000 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., which is now home to a digital marketing agency called Effective Spend.
The nearly 20,000-square-foot building is more than double the size of Effective Spend’s previous office space on Barton Springs Road.
It’s a good thing, too, because Effective Spend’s Austin team has nearly doubled in less than four years, going from 28 employees in 2017 to 48 employees at the end of 2020 to the current headcount of 53 employees.
The company’s overall headcount of 62 also includes four remote employees and another five employees who work out of a Los Angeles office that opened last year to serve clients on the West Coast.
The move to the new building will allow the team to continue to expand in Austin.
Effective Spend purchased the building in September 2021 from United Way for Greater Austin, the nonprofit organization that originally built and owned it.
The mural was designed by local artist John Rockwell in collaboration with design firm Creative Suitcase as a gift to United Way. A stand near the mural also invites visitors to donate to United Way.
The new office is more than just a mural, though. The move puts Effective Spend within close proximity of popular East Austin businesses like Sour Duck Market, the 24-hour Bennu coffee shop and The Wheel bar.
“In a way, it feels like a homecoming,” Effective Spend founder and CEO Brian Wulfe said in a statement. “Our very first office was on East 6th Street, and we’ve really missed being in this area.”
