Austin-based Bandit has offered contactless coffee since 2019. Now, goodies from the app-only coffee shop can be delivered to your front door thanks to a recent acquisition.
Gopuff, an on-demand delivery service for everyday items, such as pet supplies and toothpaste, announced on Tuesday it acquired Bandit for an undisclosed amount.
Unlike traditional coffee shops, Bandit visitors must download a mobile app to order, then pick up their coffee, matcha or breakfast sandwiches at one of two locations in Austin.
Following the acquisition, Austinites are now able to order Bandit goodies from Gopuff Kitchen and have them delivered to their home or office. Philadelphia-based Gopuff rolled out Gopuff Kitchen, which will deliver made-to-order food to customers, on Tuesday.
Prior to launching Bandit, CEO and co-founder Max Crowley worked at Uber. There, he said he saw the power of bringing a single-tap mobile experience to things people do every day.
“It was clear that it’d be possible to bring that same seamless and fast experience to another common routine: ordering a coffee,” Crowley told Built In via email. “When we started to develop Bandit, we uncovered ways to improve upon existing restaurant infrastructure, with a focus on flexibility and speed. Our cafes were modular and prefabricated, so they could be deployed in any vacant location within just a few hours.”
Bandit’s Medical Arts location, located near the University of Texas, began out of an airstream. Now, this location operates from a Gopuff Kitchen truck.
“Gopuff is the best possible place for us to scale our mission,” Crowley, who joins Gopuff as vice president of business expansion, said. “Their business and operational model is extremely unique and differentiated: Gopuff has micro-fulfillment centers in every market that it serves. Now, by integrating Kitchens into our existing micro-fulfillment centers, customers gain access to fresh food delivered alongside their everyday essentials — all in one order and within minutes. For the first time, you can wake up and order a breakfast sandwich, matcha latte, and toothpaste refill at once.”
Bandit’s other co-founder James Gallagher will lead deployments of Gopuff Kitchen, and Cyrus Jia, former lead engineer at Bandit, will head Gopuff’s technical strategy and integration.
Gopuff Kitchen is currently available in 20 cities, including Austin, Miami, Nashville, Phoenix, San Antonio, Tampa and Philadelphia. Parent company Gopuff is available in more than 450 cities across North America and the United Kingdom, according to the release. Each service has a flat delivery fee of $1.95.
