Austin-based Aceable, which makes mobile education safety software for teens and parents, raised $4.7 million in a Series A funding round led by Silverton Partners and 50 other investors, including Floodgate Ventures, NextGen Angels and Capital Factory.

The company’s digital driver’s ed course allows teens to prepare for the written permit test in Texas and Florida, and plans to use the new capital to expand the platform. The student app uses humorous, meme-themed content and its mascot, a cartoon robot, to reframe boring driving school classes as something fun and easy to do in teens’ spare time. Parents can use their own version of the app to track student progress.

The app is certified by the Texas Education Agency as an approved defensive driving course, but it’s not just for teens. The company’s Defensive Driving program is also accepted by all Texas courts for ticket dismissal, and some insurance companies offer discounts to customers who complete it.

So far, the company has enjoyed plenty of positive engagement from its users, who have filled Aceable’s Facebook wall and Instagram feed with selfies holding their new driver permits after using the app to earn their license.

The company’s software can also be adapted for employee training and corporate compliance courses, as well as for standardized test prep courses.
