The Team

Upstart’s Home Lending team is Our Mortgage Operations team is the newest division at Upstart. Over the next 12 months we’re looking to continue rapidly expanding the product across all 50 states. Over time, we will also add additional products, including additional equity and 1st mortgage products. The team will be small to start, so we’re looking for individuals with a start up mentality, willing to go above and beyond their job descriptions to help our customers and ultimately put Upstart Mortgage at the top of the list for best places to get a Home Loan.  

As the Senior Credit Analyst at Upstart, you will help build out our mortgage team. This role will be an integral part of our Ops organization, working directly with our mortgage loan applicants and Licensed Processors to review applications and close home loans. The role requires excellent communication skills, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and a passion for high-quality customer service.


Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Columbus, OH or Austin, TX. This position is primarily remote with on-site requirements at the Columbus, OH or Austin, TX office multiple times a month.

Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.

Travel Requirements - As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular on-sites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.


How you’ll make an impact:

  • Reviewing all documents submitted to qualify borrowers, including but not limited to reviewing complex income and credit documentation. 
  • Deliver an outstanding customer experience through written and verbal communications  by representing Upstart when working with potential borrowers as part of the verification process. 
  • Serve as a resource for customer issues, complaints, application information verification, and other complex tasks.
  • Identify possible areas of process and workflow improvements, contribute to the development and implementation of solutions. 

What we’re looking for: 

  • Minimum qualifications:
    • 2 - 5 years’ experience in consumer lending, personal banking, or similar position with equivalent experience. 
    • Experience in reading and understanding various tax forms and schedules, financial statements, credit report details, and general lending concepts.
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; able to assess probable scenarios to determine potential risks.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to generate succinct timelines and escalation details.
    • Passion for delivering an exceptional customer experience through written and verbal interactions.
    • Track record of high performance with the ability to work quickly and accurately.
    • BA / BS degree, Associates degree, or equivalent work experience. 
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Previous work experience as a mortgage underwriter or mortgage loan processor.
    • Familiarity with Fraud and BSA/AML practices and procedures. 
    • Ability to learn quickly and retain new processes and procedures.
    • Impeccable judgment with strong attention to detail; acknowledgement that a small mistake can have a large impact. 
    • Understanding of loan underwriting, financial statements, tax documents, and payroll.

This is a Non-Exempt position. Employees in this position are paid an hourly pay rate, on a bi-weekly basis, and are eligible to receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a work week, or over 8 in a work day if required by state law.

Upstart's newest office in Austin overlooks a waterfront park, Auditorium Shores, in the trendy Bouldin Creek neighborhood. With views of the Austin skyline, the office serves as a hub for our sales teams. The workspace is also available to ATX Upstarters seeking an in-office experience.
