The opportunity 

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities.  These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services;  designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

This position is for a Principal Diffractive Optics Engineer within Magic Leap's Optical Engineering team. The role blends software engineering, applied mathematics, and physics with an emphasis on software engineering. As a Principal Diffractive Optics Engineer, you will drive the innovation and advancement of key optical component-level technology to enable the next generation of our Mixed Reality experience. You will be responsible for developing software tools that facilitate the design and implementation of optical components and for contributing effectively to technical deliverables to achieve ambitious goals.

What you’ll do 

  • Act as a key member of the Optical Engineering team with a focus on simulation and layout tool development
  • Develop and use custom in-house software as well as other simulation tools for eyepiece design, simulation, layout, and fabrication
  • Enhance in-house design capabilities to advance optical component technology
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data; solve technical problems; innovate creative solutions; and clearly communicate findings
  • Support technology development efforts to achieve project goals and drive innovation

The experience you bring

  • MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Optics, Physics, or related fields, with 8+ years of industry experience for MS holders or 6+ years for Ph.D. holders in optical components or sub-systems
  • Understand linear algebra and numerical analysis at a moderate level
  • Exhibit some knowledge of scientific computing, including HPC and simulation, primarily C++ development and some Python
  • Showcase expert knowledge of nanophotonics, including theory and simulation
  • Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills, focusing on problem resolution and delivering solutions
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary groups
  • Exhibit excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience in computer programming and software development
  • Experience in developing OpenGL applications
  • Experience in nanofabrication and clean room processes
  • Experience with optical measurements

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.

US Base Salary Range

$163,000$271,000 USD
