Discover Impactful Work:

Oversees the daily operations of the clinical and Pharmacokinetic (PK) laboratories including the central lab function. Works with the lab managers to validate clinical tests and respond appropriately to clinical issues that pertain to clinical laboratory operations.

A day in the Life:

  • Interacts/communicates/coordinates with staff, supervisors and other departments within the facility in regard to lab issues or other pertinent information.
  • Troubleshoots problems and finds resolutions within the various labs.
  • Configures information systems for upcoming studies.
  • Evaluates quality data, records and other documents at a minimum of once per month, to ensure accurate and timely results. Analyzes operations for improvement.
  • Reviews study proposals for feasibility and issues relating to the laboratories.
  • Manages staff, which may include interviewing and selection, job description preparation, professional development, goal setting, performance management, coaching and mentoring, employee counseling, and separations. Approves courses of action on salary administration, hiring, corrective action, and terminations.
  • Collaborates, reviews, and updates SOPs and other functional policies as required.
  • Develops and is responsible for schedules and performance standards.
  • Interacts with senior management, and others concerning matters of significance to the company.
  • Conducts business and technical briefings for senior management and for external management and / or representatives.
  • Serves as primary subject matter expert for applicable laboratory-related local and federal regulation and accreditation compliance.

Education

Education and training that meets the minimum standards for the College of American Pathologists (CAP) High Complexity Testing in the Technical Supervisor role

  • Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical or biological science and 4 years training and experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty or
  • Master's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science and 2 years training experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty or
  • Doctoral degree in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical or biological science with 1 year training and experience in the respective specialty

Experience

  • 3+ years of management responsibility, preferably in a clinical laboratory environment
  • 7+ years professional, clinical laboratory and/or clinical research industry experience
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification in applicable specialty is a plus but not required

In some cases an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of clinical laboratory testing, special handling processing, and laboratory instrumentation
  • Knowledge of statistics to determine drift, variance, reference ranges and other parameters to monitor laboratory processes
  • Ability to write operational procedures, responses to queries, responses to audit findings
  • Ability to train and mentor others
  • Strong leadership skills, including delegation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Problem solving and troubleshooting abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in an office and/or a laboratory and/or a clinical environment with exposure to electrical equipment.
  • Occasionally drives to site or client locations, occasionally travels within the United States.
  • Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Rare exposure to skin and lung irritants, radiation, toxic materials and hazardous waste.
  • Personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear, garments and gloves.
  • Exposure to fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures on rare occasions.
  • May rarely work non-standard hours.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stationary for 6-8 hours per day.
  • Repetitive hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.
  • Moderate mobility required.
  • Occasional crouching, stooping, bending and twisting of upper body and neck.
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying (or otherwise moves) objects including luggage and laptop computer with a maximum lift of 15-20 lbs.
  • Ability to access and use a variety of computer software developed both in-house and off-the-shelf.
  • Ability to communicate complex information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Frequently interacts with others, relates sensitive information to diverse groups both internally & externally.
